Dr. Zakir Naik’s Early Life and Education

Dr. Zakir Abdul Karim Naik was born on October 18 1965 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He completed his high school at St Peter’s High School located in Mumbai and later joined Kishinchand Chellaram College. From an academic path, he is enrolled in Topiwala National Medical College and Nair Hospital as well as the University of Mumbai to complete his MBBS degree.

After completing his physician’s studies Dr. Naik further focused his attention on preaching and education in Islam by establishing the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) in 1991. That education given at the tender age of his youth endeared him to a later role as an able Islamic scholar and preacher.

Dr. Zakir Naik started his journey in Dawah (Calling people to Islam) since 1991 he established ITED (Islamic International School at Mumbai and United Islamic Aid providing scholarships to almost needy Muslim youths). 

As a mimic of the South African, Islamic preacher Ahmed Deedat whom he first met in 1987, he has been described as ‘Deedat plus’. In 2006, he started Peace TV, one of the biggest satellite religious channels in the world. In the year 2021, Naik launched Al Hidaayah, an Islamic education subscription service called Al Hidaayah, which he said is “halal” on Netflix.

Comments made by Naik were followed by criticism from Sushi Das of The Age who stated that Muslims must support the morality of Islam and distance themselves from the Western civilization.

St David’s Hall, Cardiff

On 20 ^{th} August 2006, a conference conducted by Dr. Zakir Naik in Cardiff caused a politically charged furor when Welsh MP David Davies demanded that the conference be stopped and described the speaker as a “hate-monger”, arguing that his idea was too radical to be aired in public. 

For that, some local Muslims, including Saleem Kidwai of the Muslim Council of Wales, came out in support of Naik by explaining his calling for inter-religious unity. The event went on as planned since the Cardiff council found that Naik’s speeches would not encourage extremism or violence.

Dr. Zakir Naik was invited in 2014 to Gambia by the president of Gambia Yahya Jammeh to celebrate twenty years of revolution in Gambia. Naik was in New Zealand between October 11 and 22 delivering four lectures, which covered issues such as terrorism, jihad, mistaken ideas about Islam, and others. VPs were afforded an opportunity to attend his talks which included senior government officials, churchmen, and the public. 

Universities with stands were the University of Gambia and Kairaba Beach Hotel. Moreover, cultural and social relations were another agenda that Naik addressed with Yahya Jammeh; President of Gambia and the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council.

Dr. Zakir Naik delivered many lecture series in Malaysia; for instance, four big lectures in Malaysia in 2012 in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru Kuantan, etc. Although another group, HINDRAF protested that his speeches were capable of fanning racial discontent, the events were held with the blessings of other dignitaries such as ex-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. 

Later in the year 2016, they traveled to Malaysia again to give six more lectures some of which included: Understanding between religions. His 2019 speech on Islam phobia in Kelantan attracted more than 100,000 people.
